Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Originally had a multiplayer component, but the feature was canceled early in development.
In a thread on Reset, user Nightengale pointed out the Simon Laroche’s LinkedIn account, who is currently working as a game director on one of Horizon Forbidden West developer Guerilla Games’ unannounced projects. Between a long stint at Ubisoft Montreal and his current position, Laroche worked at Eidos Montreal on the Guardians of the Galaxy project, as director of online gameplay for the game.
Laroche’s account indicates that he worked on the online component of the game between March 2017 and February 2018, but the multiplayer aspect was canceled. This follows with the game’s reveal last month, in which publisher Square Enix confirmed that the title will be a single-player experience only.
It’s no big surprise that Eidos Montreal has already considered a multiplayer approach. Marvel’s Avengers – another squad superhero game from Square Enix – relied heavily on online play, with the single-player campaign taking a relatively small share of the overall experience. However, it would be interesting to know exactly what prompted the Guardians team to revisit their multiplayer approach, especially since the feature appears to have been canned relatively early in the development timeline.
Unveiled during Square Enix’s showcase at E3 2021 (but disclosed in advance), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy puts gamers in the shoes and leather jacket of Star-Lord, also known as Peter. Quill from Earth, with the rest of the team fighting at his side. The decisions you make as Quill will shape the narrative, as well as your team’s opinions about you, as you meet characters from the rich history of the Guardians comics.
If you’ve been dreaming of an intergalactic adventure and can’t wait for the team’s third hit in 2023, you won’t wait too long. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is out relatively soon, and is slated to launch on October 26 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, with a cloud version available on Nintendo Switch.
